Tech Corner -
Inside the S9 AutoSet

The S9 AutoSet is ResMed's premium auto-adjusting device. It is designed to maximise comfort while continuing to deliver optimal therapy.

The S9 AutoSet features a newly enhanced, intelligent algorithm to maintain the ideal air pressure by automatically adjusting throughout the night. It delivers more comfortable and more effective treatment than ever before.

How does it do it?

Enhanced AutoSet Algorithm

The S9's enhanced AutoSet algorithm now features a Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA) detection system. It is able to differentiate between an obstructive apnoea, where the airway is closed, and a central apnoea, where the airway is open, and respond appropriately.

Previous devices were unable to determine what type of apnoea was occurring.

The new, enhanced algorithm uses the Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) to determine whether the airway is open or closed during an apnoea. Small oscillations in pressure are added to the current device pressure. The CSA algorithm uses the resulting flow and pressures to measure whether the airway is open or closed.

If the airway is closed, the algorithm will increase the pressure depending on the severity and duration of the apnoea. If the airway is open, the pressure will not increase.

In order to treat sleep apnoea, ResMed's AutoSet algorithm will increase pressure in response to flow limitation, snoring and apnoeas. If no events are detected, the algorithm will very slowly reduce the pressure. The newly enhanced algorithm recognises more patterns of flow limitation, can differentiate between obstructive and central apnoeas, and is more tolerant of mask leak. The enhanced algorithm will respond more accurately and more rapidly than ever before, producing more effective treatment.

Expiratory Pressure Relief

Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR) is another comfort feature of the S9 AutoSet. As soon as exhalation is detected, the motor speed slows to allow the pressure to drop. With easier exhalation, comfort is improved while effective treatment pressures are maintained.

Quietness

Now that it features axial air-flow, the S9's enhanced Easy-Breathe motor produces less turbulence. The motor also features foam and noise isolating materials. The result is simple: less noise radiated into the room and less noise conducted down the tubing.

An S9 series device is no louder than normal breathing and the noise you feel down the tube is 78% quieter than ResMed S8 devices and competitor's products!

The enhanced Easy-Breathe motor features small diameter lightweight impellers which provide a lower inertia. This enables the motor to track your normal breathing waveform and produce the small oscillations in pressure required when using FOT to detect Central Sleep Apnoeas.

SlimLine tubing

Tubing hadn't changed much for 20 years until SlimLine and ClimateLine tubing came along! Compared to traditional tubing, SlimLine tubing is 40% lighter, 20% thinner and takes up 35% less space. So, it reduces drag on your mask overnight, meaning less leaks and more freedom to move about in bed. It's also easier to pack away and take travelling.

ClimateControl

The H5i and ClimateLine can be used with any S9 series device to provide you with optimal humidification without rainout.
